Richard Groberg

July 6, 1924 — November 18, 2016

Richard (Dick) Groberg, age 92, died peacefully at his daughter's house while on vacation from Florida, surrounded by his wife and daughters. He came out to California to celebrate his 65th anniversary and entered eternity on November 18, 2016, after a week on hospice care.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara, daughter Karen Mckeon, son-in-law Steven, grandsons, Matthew and Kevin and daughter Linda Groberg. He was preceded in death by his daughter Gayle, who died in a car accident on her 34th birthday. His mother and father, brother Swan and sister Edna all died many years before Dick.

Dick was born in Gary, Indiana, the only one in his family not born in Sweden. He grew up in Gary, and excelled in basketball, baseball and golf. He pitched batting practice for the Chicago Cubs when he was 15-16, and played for the Cubs farm team. He had draft letters from the Cleveland Indians and White Sox; however, WWII prevented him from living that dream. He served in the Army in World War II in the 11th Airborne, 675th Glider Battalion, and was a combat wounded Purple Heart veteran from the Battle of Luzon.

Dick and Barbara lived in California for most of their marriage.

Dick loved to play golf, and used to play Pebble Beach when it was $5 a round. At one time he was a 6 handicap and even with failing eyesight could still make a long putt.

After retirement they moved to a golf community in Naples, Florida, to be closer to their grandchildren and then moved to Summerfield, FL. They enjoyed many years of golf and dancing together.

His sense of humor never left him, and he was known to say "I'm 92 and I still have all my own teeth."

It is well with his soul.

The family would like to thank the caring staff at Ventura County Medical Center, Vitas Hospice Care and Angeleno Mortuary for the support and care they provided.

No public memorial services are planned.
