Richard Smith

February 9, 1931 — November 2, 2021

Richard “Dick” Lloyd Smith, age 90, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 2, 2021. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Grace Smith and grandsons Tim and Danny Renolds. He is survived by his brother, David Smith; his son Richard Smith and wife Christine; his daughter Alice (Smith) Renolds and husband Tom; his grandchildren Stacy (Smith) Peterson and husband Sean; Stephanie (Smith) Miller and husband Keith; Scott Renolds and wife Jen; and his great-grandchildren Steven, Cassidy, and Peyton Peterson; Madelynn and Derrick Miller; and Lexi and Natalie Renolds.
Richard was born in Michigan in 1931. He spent his childhood and early adult years in Detroit. An athlete, he lettered in football and basketball in high school. He and his father both received the Eagle Scout Award together. Richard met his wife Grace while in high school and married her in 1951. Upon his high school graduation, he enlisted in the Navy, and served during the Korean War, and was honor-ably discharged in 1953.
After relocating to California, Richard worked as a machinist, later becoming Vice President of Sales for Nobur Manufacturing. Richard took pride in raising his two children and attending their extracurricular activities. He was active in Boy Scouts with his son as a Assistant Scout Master and Merit Badge Counselor and in the community, having served as twice Past Commander of American Legion, Aircraft Coast #581.
He joined the San Fernando Elks Lodge in 1973 and was actively involved in many positions from Exalted Ruler to District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler. He prized himself on the work for the District Scholar-ship committee providing college scholarships to those in need. He helped to organize the Thanksgiving dinners the Elks served to more than 1,000 families each year.
He and Grace traveled all over the world, enjoyed telling stories of their adventures and were fortunate to travel with their children and grandchildren on their last two European cruises. Always the gentleman, Richard loved to be social, entertain and dance. He always offered to lend a helping hand wherever he could. He had a wonderful sense of humor and took great pride in his family and philanthropic activities.
A celebration of Richard’s life will be held November 19th with a viewing at 10am until 11:30am and a memorial service at 11:45am, concluding at 12:30pm at Angeleno Mortuary in Van Nuys. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1:30pm at Hollywood Hills Forest Lawn. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
