Shirley Mae Elliott (Coles), of Cathedral City California, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2016. She was born March 14, 1932, in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, to Esther Elliott. Shirley started a music career at the age of 14 winning the Wisconsin state music championship. Highlights of her career included being Ethel Merman's understudy in New York, performing at the Waldorf Astoria and Copa Cabanna. She opened the Fontainebleau in Miami, plus 3 'Mouse Traps', 2 in Miami and 1 in Georgia. Shirley worked with the likes of Martha Raye at the 5 0'clock club and doubled with Patti Page, also working with some of the big bands during the 50's which took her to Vegas where she opened the Fremont Hotel and played at many other venues. In the late 50's she acquired her real estate license and had a very successful career. Shirley moved to the desert 13 years ago. During those years she sang at many clubs, restaurants and hosted numerous parties at her home, both in Manhattan Beach and the desert. Thanksgiving and Christmas was special-opening her home to many. She was past executive chair of the Woman's Company of Los Angeles and past member of Desert Diners. Even though she wasn't a mega star, Shirley will be known as one of those legendary singers that truly left an impact on all that had a chance to hear her voice. Shirley and Rusty Warren co-wrote her famous "Little Red Book" and her trademark was her rendition of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow". Many of her friends would called her "Diva of the Desert". One of Shirley's other favorite pastimes was travelling the world and cruising with her many closest friends. Shirley is survived by her sister, Margaret (Peggy) Wagar and husband Howard, nephew, Kenneth, niece, Charlene and a host of many friends. Memorial with Celebration of Life Service will be held September 24, 2016, 11:00a.m. - 3:00p.m., at the 360 Restaurant, Palm Springs. In lieu of flowers donations in her memory to a charity of choice or anything dealing with animals. Jared Michael Trexel of Angeleno Mortuary, Van Nuys, in charge of arrangements.
